15 Things You Didn't Know The Purpose Of!

Top things you didn’t know the purpose of! These are the everyday items and things you didn’t know the use for! #14. “Pen Cap”-- You have definitely noticed the tiny hole in the top of a cap and may have used it to try and make a whistle or pretended it was a tiny spyglass. Most people believe this hole has something to do with preventing a pen from drying-out but this is not the case. The hole in the pen cap actually serves as a safety feature. In the event that a small child swallows one, the hole allows air to pass through and reduces the risk of suffocation. #13. “Measuring Tape Tools”-- The modern measuring tape machine is a handy invention that most construction workers and contractors can’t live without, but even some of the most skilled workers might not know it has two incredible yet simple features. First there is the serrated edge on the metal end of the tape. This was put into the design so that if you desired you could put a minor scratch or indentation into the surface you are measuring, in order to give you a marker to make further measurements or designs off of. The other feature is right next to the serrated edge. You may have noticed the small hole that is commonly located in the metal tip. So what’s the purpose of this? Well this is so that if you are measuring something from a point where a nail or screw is you can hook the tape onto the nail and hold the tape in place. #12. “The Quarter’s Edge”-- You probably have spied the hundreds of tiny grooves that mark the outside edge of a quarter but not thought twice about it having a purpose. But these tiny ridges actually once served an important function and no it’s not just so magician’s can get a better grip during coin tricks. Up until recently, historically speaking, the cost of the metals in a coin reflected the coins value so many people took to shaving the edges off of the coins and then used the rest of the coin to purchase items as if the coin still had full value. They would then save up their shavings and melted them together to create new coins or just sell the chunks. In order to combat this, coin minters started putting these ridges on their coins so that retailers could tell whether the coins had been shaved. This practice, though not necessary today, is carried on for the sake of tradition and aesthetic. So why don’t nickels have them? Because no one cares about nickels.

15- Jeans small pocket was originally for a pocket watch 14 - Pen cap is to prevent choking 13 - measuring tape metal edge is to scratch on a surface to mark it or to latch onto a screw or nail to hold in place 12 - quarters were shaved off back in the day for a reason that isn’t relevant today 11 - Hole in the tab of a soda can is to hold a straw 10 - clothing that comes with extra buttons/fabric in a small bag is to test how they’re affected in your washer 9 - small metal loops in grocery cart are to hang grocery bags although this video didn’t even show demonstration or pics as examples 8 - half belt was a way to keep warm and be used to tighten clothing back in the day 7 - fuel gauge on dashboard has an icon of a an arrow/hose letting you know what side to pull up to when getting gas 6 - converse holes on the side are for having your laces go through them if wanted 5 - pill bottle cap can be placed on top of the bottle but upside down for easy access every time you need to take a pill. That way you can just lift up the lid instead of unscrewing it from those orange medicine bottles every time. For people who would have a hard time opening otherwise(elderly or if you have hand problems) 4 - margins on paper originally for preserving writings. By having margins you had more room on the edge that so if the borders of your paper deteriorated then your actual writing would still survive. Like if rats chewed on the edges of the paper. Margins on paper have just been kept ever since. 3 - ketchup cups are meant to be unfolded to allow room for more ketchup or easy access for dipping. Chinese boxes are also meant to unfold. 2 - cotton ball on top of beanies were to cover up unsightly seams and also protected from hitting your head under a boat dock back in the day 1 - underwear’s small pocket is for hygiene

Vikings never stuck anything to their helmets (Not horns, or pompoms), that's a common misconception that people have. The pompom is simply to hide the stitching, it doesn't date back to Vikings or anything like that.

I'm surprised this hasn't been said before, I use this informative video, to waste my time instead of actually educating myself.

The hole in the bic pen cap works. When I was in high school, I was doing homework on my own at home and absentmindedly had the end of my pen with cap in my lips while I was reading. I think I sneezed or hiccuped and inhaled the cap into my trachea. The cap made a whistling noise with my breathing. I was able to heimlich myself by throwing myself onto a football. Scary episode, but I found out what the hole in the cap was for.

Twice you've used the word "inot" when it should be "in". You don't hold someting "into place", you hold it "in place", And by the way - that story about the pom-pom and the ht? Utter tosh. And how about showing us the aternative way to lace a Converse shoe.....

The gusset is there because vaginal secretions are quite acidic, and will damage/ permanently stain panties. So there's an extra thick piece of fabric there to absorb that stuff and prevent you from ruining your 50 dollar undies every time you go on a date with a hot guy. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Ok! That soda can shit was too cool. I ran to the refrigerator and grabbed a can of soda but I don't have any straws. SHIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!

Did you know you can reuse toilet paper a second time by merely shaking it real hard after the first use? When you use a public restroom you'll find a lot of opportunity in the waste can. When no one is watching....I take as much as I can hide in my shirt to reuse at home. I'm thinking about writing a book called, "The Shit People Don't Know".

The gusset on ladies panties was not intended for holding hygiene products. It's because of the irritation it would cause if a seam was in that place. Please don't do this unless you like buying panties all the time.
Hannah Bell
Ladies and confused Gentlemen. He didn't say "women use them for holding items" He said we use them to help hold items into place. Like a panty liner or a pad. It would be too hard to stick them down without it there. It was just misleading because of the image with the tampon. We all know by now that the image selection of the video sucks ass so let's move on.

I saw a video just like this five years ago and 50 other ones in the wakeOf it. It’s now May 2018 and people are still making the same video over and over again. Also they never explained what the hell I’m supposed to do with the converse lace holes. They just said you can lace them up, But not how to lace them up and how lacing them up a different way helps.

The fuzzy pom pom was actually put on their by sailors they wore hats and while the were on the bottom deck of boats they would hit there heads sometimes so they put a pom pom on top so it wouldn't hurt their head if it got bumped

You are completely wrong about the extra cotton fabric sewn into panties. Perhaps you should have asked a woman old enough to remember why. We do still exist. First a little history. Women used to not wear anything under their skirts. Then bloomers were invented. Bloomers were linen, then later made of cotton. All bloomers were open at the crotch to make toilet trips easier. This also allowed a healthy amount of air flow. By the time panties were invented, another type of fabric was also becoming popular. That fabric was polyester- an oil based synthetic. Now underwear was still produced in cotton and also silk if you were wealthy, but polyester was very popular because it was smooth like silk and clothing fabric slides easily over it. Women soon noticed a problem though. Due to the nature of synthetic fabrics, women who wore polyester panties were increasingly suffering from yeast, bladder, and kidney infections. It was not long after, that panty manufacturers started sewing a cotton liner into all polyester panties. You will never find a synthetic pair without the cotton liner, but you can find natural fiber panties without the extra fabric in the crotch. Jockey makes panties without the liner. I own a few pairs. However, due to the popularity of pants, most cotton undies will still have a bit of extra fabric to reinforce the crotch and protect our lady bits.

At 3:20 I bet the designer of the Can didn't even realized or thought about the hole holding the straw. They made the hole simply for extra grip that's all.

If the soda can thing is true.. then why is the same tab used for things like dog food and tuna? Who's sipping that?

That extra poker is actually for lighters genius
Carolyn Gee
And could you be more lazy about the lack of nickel ridges? “No one cares about nickels LOL”. NO. It’s because nickels are a standard weight for calibration (5grams), as are pennies which you also failed to mention (2.5 grams). Having a fine serrated edge would make them more susceptible to being eroded and their weight being affected.

Guys also have a pocket in boxer-briefs, inside the flap, under the grundle. Great to hold my lighter, smokes, or phone when I'm walking around with no pants on

Hope you get some good ideas, but my 11 yr old grandson knows how to tell which side the gas cap is on. He asked me if I knew and I told him that back in my younger days they told us in Drivers Education. Maybe you should go over things that used to be known as driving "manners". Such as move into left lane if possible when oncoming traffic is approaching, to move off the road if a funeral is passing, and definitely using TURN SIGNALS BEFORE the second that you turn.

The hole in the pen cap is to prevent a vacuum action when removing the cap and making it easier to get it on and off. There's no way a child could breathe through that 1/64" hole in it.

I knew the answer for the small pocket in jeans (#15) was gonna be for pocket watches even before he said mid 1800s. A relative once gave me a silver pocket watch back in the 90s and I used that pocket for it. But... in general, I used it far more often for a zippo lighter or for keeping spare change, yeah.

the whole hole in a soda can pop thing to hold your straw isn't real. the hole is there to save material, and give structural support to an otherwise very thing piece of metal. if you look at the way the hole is formed it's not just a hole, it's got a curved edge that adds support to the strip, it's just a bit of luck that it can most straws decently
