Edward Petherbridge in Strange Interlude, 3


The last of three excerpts featuring Edward Petherbridge as Charlie Marsden in Eugene O'Neill's Strange Interlude. This 1988 television adaptation was directed by Herbert Wise for Bowden Productions Ltd. Also featured in these clips are Glenda Jackson as Nina, David Dukes as Darrell, Ken Howard as Sam, and Julie Eccles as Madeline. Edward Petherbridge appeared in the West End and Broadway stage productions of Strange Interlude in 1984/5, winning an Olivier Award and gaining a Tony Award nomination. The play was first produced on Broadway in 1928.

Really fascinating clips from this play (or rather, television adaptation from the play), which I've only recently become aware of. It is spoken of as "experimental" and even "surreal," but aside from the built-in soliloquies it seems quite naturalistic. I'd like to find the full version. O'Neill was such a brilliant, multifaceted writer, endlessly inventive. Thank you for posting, and whetting the appetite for more.
