How to Get Rid of Mice, Spiders, and Ants. How to keep pests out without hurting yourself with chemical repellents? According to the Canadian Center of Occupational Health and Safety, the chemicals in pest repellants may cause headache, diarrhea, mental confusion, weakness, loss of reflexes, unconsciousness, and even death. How about we go “au naturel” and try out some pest repellents that you can find right in your kitchen cabinet or garden? Try eucalyptus essential oil to keep spiders away, peppermint oil to wipe away ant trails, marigold to repel all kinds of pests like mosquitoes and flies, and aluminium foil or original scented dryer sheets to keep mice out. Biz Baz Studio /> SUMMARY -Add some peppermint oil to your cleaning solution and mop your floor with it to wipe away ant trails. -Lemon basil and cinnamon basil can effectively repel the Anopheles gambiae complex, a group of mosquito species known to carry malaria. -Lavender scent can protect your home, pets, and other plants from being infested by bugs. -According to research, nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that your kitty loves so much, acts as an irritant against these common household pests. -Rosemary is commonly used in cooking and has medicinal properties. It also attracts butterflies but deters flies and mosquitoes. -Apply a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil to some cotton balls and put them in areas where you often find spiders. -Mix baking soda with sugar, and place a bowl of water near it. This lethal trio creates a chemical reaction inside the roaches’ stomach, which, let’s just say, won’t end well for the little buggers. -Marigold contains pyrethrum, a compound that’s commonly found in commercial bug sprays. -Put original scented dryer sheets in these places to keep mice out. -Protect yourself and your family by setting traps with peanut butter for mice and rats. -Mouse-proof your house by placing sheets of aluminum foil in their hideouts. -Try ultrasonic repellents if you’re willing to spend the money. These things emit high-frequency sounds that are only sensitive to a mouse’s ears. -Borax is used as a cleansing agent and in glass-making. It can also kill ants, roaches, termites, spiders, and even mold. -Use steel wool or copper mesh to mouse-proof your house and seal the deal with caulking. -If you need to keep wild animals out of your garden, cayenne pepper is a perfectly safe way to keep them at bay. Sprinkle it on the topsoil to keep rabbits and squirrels from munching on your fresh veggies. -Burning neem leaves gives about 76% mosquito protection for up to two hours. You can also heat the leaves up for 25% protection. -Another plant that’s proven to fend off mosquitoes is lemon thyme. Smash it and apply it to your skin after running a test on a small area. Had an outdoor cat that looked like he had is own cloud around him. Mosquitoes had bitten his ears and forehead so much he was loosing his fur. I didn't want to put anything on him like a spray or collar because he was an outside kitty and not really all that comfortable around anyone. I finally brewed up a VERY strong peppermint tea ( I think I used about 3 bags for the cup). I let it cool, then took it outside, got hold of him, and doused him with it until he was soaking wet. He took off like a shot and I didn't see him for a few days. I was concerned because I'd read that you shouldn't use peppermint oil on cats because it was toxic to some cats. I kept watching for him and he showed up several days later, without his cloud! He still looked a mess, but without all of the new bites, he was getting better! His fur grew back in and he became so loving, I brought him inside and I think he had a pretty nice life.

All in all, I don't mind Wild Animals in my garden, so long as they don't eat anything.

For me spiders aren't pests instead they help us getting rid of some needless insects.

I have peppermint, basil, lavender, marigold, lemon thyme in my gardens and when I sit outside I rub one of those plants on me so mosquitoes don't bite me and it really works 😇😱😘

Ultrasonic repellers are BS! They don’t work.

I tried cayenne pepper to keep out the rabbits in my flowerbed. When I came home from work, the rabbits were not only in my flowerbed, they were rolling in the cayenne pepper. I guess I had rabbits who loved their environment spicy.

I can testify for pepper. mice kept eating my AC condenser wires and I had to call the AC repair to retire the damage. Finally I sprinkled hot chili pepper powder around the inside and the outside of=f the compressor outside and no problems that year. So I do it once every winter and haven’t had a problem. Also I use it around planting’s, recycling containers kept outside and that kept mice away too. Cheap and excellent and safe.

Narrator: mice are highly sensitive to sounds, especially metallic ones. Me: *blasts Death Metal*
Red Vynil
If they're afraid of metallic sounds, does that mean I have to start buying and playing lots of Metallica records?

Not only does the insect spray repel the insects but "It repels you too."

Thankfully the house I live in now is clean and neat, but one of the old houses I lived in had a mice problem, I ve tried everything at that time, the only thing that worked was a combination of ready oreintal incense , the burned smell of oregano, and Arabian gum together.

I always use peanut butter in my mouse traps, works every time

title - These plants, not 'this plant'. A misleading title - possible to correct and align with your content honourably.

Horse pucky. I live near a forest and recently experienced an influx of mice. My gardens all around my house are loaded with peppermint plants. I sprayed peppermint oil all over my house. IT DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. DIDN'T PHASE THEM IN THE LEAST! I went on to try basil, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, marigolds, oregano oil, dryer sheets (they made a nest out of the dryer sheets and had babies in it) cayenne, neem, thyme, powdered bay leaves, and tea tree oil. NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THESE DID ANYTHING WHATSOEVER TO DETER THEM! Bought several ultrasonic repellers. Didn't help. Electric mouse trap? They caught on to it overnight. Plain old mouse traps? Same, even when I used peanut butter for bait. Didn't even slow down spiders or mosquitos, either. Much as I'm against poisoning them, my neighbor finally gave up and set out poison bait. Within a week the mice were all gone. But my house smelled really 'interesting' for awhile....

Boil a handful of cloves in a liter of water. Spray it where the mice enter or stay. It worked for me very well. I spray about every other day. No mice problem anymore
Anthony Hamilton
Yeah i had some body wash a few years back that was given to ME and it had lemon tyme in it and i never got bothered by mosquitos or gnats all day until i ran out of it then they lit ME up with bites but i know lemon tyme works i stumbled on that by accident but i was glad to have done so tho idk about the rest of the tips but I'll look into trying a few anything is better than nothing and sometimes nothing is better than the chemical sprays that irritate the eyes ,nose skin and is unpleasant to the point that it repels you too. .

I'm Indian so I had this plant for a while but I still see spiders and ants all the time (but no mice)
Argiod Silvertongue
I've used a mix of 2/3rds Baking Soda to 1/3rd sugar and place a thin line of it at all entrances to the house, and around the house at the base of the foundation where it meets the ground. Even without the water source; the mixture sterilizes them and prevents further generations; so any that survive the poison, still won't be able to lay the usual 100 eggs in 10 days. Note: cockroaches are 85% female, lay an egg sac of 100 eggs at 10 days old. And, they'll eat almost anything. When one cockroach eats something toxic, the other cockroaches will eat the corpse, thinning down the toxin... thus they become immune to it, and it becomes food. The soda/sugar mix sterilizes them, so they won't reproduce after eating the mix. Finally: I find a nice eco-balance by having a cat, and buying pet mice to release under the house. The mice eat cockroaches and the cat eats the mice.

We have horrible wasp problems every summer. I find using dryer sheets in the back of my mailbox and in ornamental garden items really keeps them away. Works here...Worth a try.

I already own basil. I love basil, it’s awesome!!!!

Who in their right mind would bait roaches? I'd rather roaches in my neighbor's house!
Andrea Patane
We used 🐁 traps with peanut butter on them for mice invasions. No 🐀s invades our 🏡 back then. Other insects never needed repelling from Lavender. They only needed to be killed and flushed down the 🚽. Skunks needed cayenne pepper to be repelled due to the number of times they dug up the 🌏. We’ll try these methods you suggested, Bright Side.

Peppermint oil did not walk. I mopped the kitchen floor and sprinkled it on stove, counters etc. Mouse came out minutes after I finished with oil and ran right through it. I thought the strong smell woul deter them. No such luck. The ultrasonic plug in did not work. 😞
diane doncheski
Duncan, can you pass the Saran wrap?

Ultrasonic plugs I can confirm don't work. I but latest version 2018. It is meant to repel fly mice moths All sorts. I've seen all come in since. My partner says it's made it worse not better

Hey B.S., thanks for the refresher course. It helps. I'm allergic to many things and have been researching bug control over 40 year. Moth crystal thrown lightly on a roof gets rid of bees, squirrels, what have you. Hope you try it. Your subscriber, DMDoncheski

In the Wilderness ... I found that my wood smoke(from my wood stove) kept mosquitoes and horseflies at bay for rather long periods of time ... it was sheer relief as I was embedded DEEP in the wilderness with no one around for almost 18 miles.... the smoke kept them away nicely !

Uh, no. Most of this info is old wives tales with a layer of pseudo-science slapped on top. Most of it won't hurt anything if you try it, so it's not harmful info, just wrong. At worst, your house will smell nice and floral with an herby overtone.
