Finland: Hey Stalin, want to hear a joke? Stalin: Da. Finland: Helsinki Stalin: I don't get it... Finland: ...and you never will!

Fun fact: the finnish communists who were exiled in the soviet union, had so little interaction with the country Finland that soviet planes dropped papers above finnish cities. There it was written that the communists promised 8 hour workday. The problem was that Finland already had 8 hour workday since 20 years before.

A soviet commander leads his soldiers when he stops as he hears a Finnish solider shout out from over a ridge “Every Finnish solider is worth ten soviets” Accepting this challenge, the soviet commander sends ten of his best men over the ridge, they don’t return. A moment later the same Finnish solider shouted out “Every Finnish solider is worth 100 soviets” Angered, the soviet commander sent 100 of his finest men over the ridge yet again none of them return a moment later the same Finnish solider shouts out “Every Finnish solider is worth 1000 soviets”, infuriated by this the soviet commander sends the last 1000 men he had left over the ridge, this time one bloodied soviet solider returns. The commander bends down just in time to hear his dying words “It’s an ambush, sir, there are two of them”.

It is sad that there are still plenty of people in Russia who believe Finland started the war.

Finland vs Soviets During the Winter War a lot of foreign volunteers went to fight for Finland, including Christopher Lee. A Hungarian battalion arrived too late for the war, but revived honors by Finland anyway. Volunteers came from Britain, France, US, Sweden, Norway, Hungary, Denmark, and Italy. I may have forgotten some nations, but Finland is definitely the underdog in this war

This was, by far, the most exciting and action-packed video uploaded so far. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire 10 minutes. The next four years are going to be amazing.

Finland may go on to "lose" the Winter War (spoiler alert) but remember that this war was about conquering Finland, not about some border territory. If Finnish Army didn't fight back Finland would have been annexed. Finland lost some land, but it kept everything that matters because it stood its ground and fought.
Unknown1355
If people are wondering what the Finnish symbols on the map are (3:33), it's stylized Finnish flag with the emblem of the Finnish Army on top. A Finnish lion (coat of arms) holding a Western sword, ready to strike, meanwhile trampling on an Eastern sabre. Gold-green colours come from the Jaeger movement of WWI, which are colours of both the Army and the Jaegers (mobile infantry).
Sandy Addison
I am really glad that you are also looking at the war in the East. The Sino-Japanese war is one that hasn't gotten a lot of press in the West.

Thank you Time Ghost. After the Great War ended I was worried that there would be no more real time war updates to look forward to anymore. Glad to see that Spartacus and Indy have stepped up once again. If you can afford it, this is the channel to donate to on Patreon or become a member of the Time Ghost army directly. Thanks again Indy and the team.

Am I the only one to observe that the Soviets were not negotiating in good faith, it takes months to mass the kind of forces the Soviets started the war with and put them in place for the Opening Attack on 30 November. There was nothing that the Finnish could do other than to fight and they sure fought and well. The would pay a very high price but they will keep their independence and there Freedom.

New to this series after discovering the great war series, excellent work. Kudos to all of the team and to Indys ability at presentation. My 12 year old son loves it as well and I will spread the word of how good the series is and make a financial contribution once I find a new job, stupid brexit.

The Phony War is over. I would say things are heating up... if I didn't know what's to come for the Red Army. This entire series is going to be such an excellent resource for teaching history and overall for anyone seeking to expand their knowledge of this period. I have no money to spare, but I have submitted Finnish subtitle translations for review. I hope I can do more of them in the future, prioritizing episodes that are relevant to Finland but ideally I'd love to provide translations for all of these episodes (having English transcripts for the episodes would make it much quicker).

Almost night A crimson horizon Painting thousand lakes red As your army approach from the east A hunter is switching his prey All alone, a man with his gun Wanders into the wild Tracks you down You cannot hide Once he is onto your trail Enter the night A flash in the darkness White Death is heading your way The fear of his foes, a hero at home Hundreds will fall by his gun You are in the sniper's sight The first kill tonight Time to die! You are in the bullet's way The White Death's prey Say goodbye! After the dawn When morning is broken Snow once white turn to red Blood red snow tells What happened last night A tale of a sniper is born Snow in mouth Hiding his breath He is steady at hand Eye to eye Target in sight The moment to fire has come Hundreds of kills The man and his rifle Embody the sisu of Finns Stay out of sight, and cover your head When he pulls the trigger you're dead You are in the sniper's sight The first kill tonight Time to die! You're in the bullet's way The White Death's prey Say goodbye! You are in the sniper's sight The first kill tonight Time to die! You are in the bullet's way The White Death's prey Say goodbye! You are in the sniper's sight Snipers sight You are the first kill tonight First kill tonight Say goodbye Say goodbye Say goodbye You are in the sniper's sight Snipers sight You are the first kill tonight First kill tonight Say goodbye Say goodbye Say goodbye

My father (b. 1917) and in Sweden told me this story about when Russia attacked Finland. Tells a lot about the Finnish mentality, Sisu! """ For some time the Russians had been shooting at the Finnish border guards. These were strictly instructed not to return fire. On the morning of the 30:th nov the phone rings at one of the border officers. He listens carefully that the Russians has attacked. When he goes out to his men. He says nothing about the attack, instead he says: "Hunting season has now started" """

The Vegan Messiah
It’s the cold winter of 1939. A Soviet column of troops is marching into Finnish territory with little to no resistance. Suddenly from behind a hill a voice is heard. “One Finnish soldier is better than ten Soviets!” The Soviet commanding officer laughs and quickly rounds up his ten best men before sending them over the hill. After a brief skirmish the voice is heard again. “One Finnish soldier is better than one hundred Soviets!” Now bewildered the Soviet commanding officer immediately rounds up one hundred more of his men and sends them over the hill. After a few long moments of gunfire and explosions the voice is heard again. “One Finnish soldier is better than one thousand Soviets!” The now enraged Soviet commanding officer orders one thousand men over the hill. After a long battle with gunfire, explosions and even anti tank fire one lone soviet soldier crawls his way over the hill. With his dying breath he tells the Soviet commanding officer. “Don’t send any more...there’s actually two of them.”
