James "Big Jim" Colosimo (born Giacomo Colosimo) was an Italian-American mob crime boss who built a criminal empire in Chicago based on prostitution, gambling, and racketeering. Immigrating from Italy at the end og the 19th century, he gained power through petty crime and the heading of a chain of brothels. From about 1902 until his death in 1920, he would lead a gang that would be known after his death as the Chicago Outfit . Johnny Torrio, an enforcer Colosimo imported in 1909 from New York, seized control after his death. It was alleged that Al Capone, a Torrio henchman, was directly involved in the murder.

wow, this really explains a lot on why a king Pin gangster like Big Jim was all alone at the restaurant during Season 1, episode 1 of Boardwalk Empire.

It may be crime, corruption, violence, extortion, name it...etc... but it IS American history and it is part of our heritage - like it or not. Thanks for the historic vid!

A real Mustache Pete!

That was typical of the Church at the time. He wasn’t denied a Catholic burial for having been a crime lord, selling women left and right and extorting money, but for having been divorced and remarried. He finally went too far!
Flint Ironstag
Big Jim should have retired when prohibition came along. Let Torrio run the show and keep the prostitution and extortion rackets for himself. He would have been better off doing that, don't you think? :-)

Do not stand at my gave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow.I am the sunlight On the ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night.Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die.

2126 S Wabash Ave, Chicago: it's now a gated parking lot right by a White Castle. But the building on the other side of where his restaurant was is still there, used to be a garage and auto parts store, now a gangster themed dinner theatre.

Stop pronouncing his name INCORRECTLY ( three different ways)!! It's COL-O- SEE-MO! THIS is getting on my nerves-otherwise, good video on his life. and YES- watch "Boardwalk Empire"- EXCELLENT portrayal of "Nucky" Johnson/Thompson.

You pronounced his name correctly only half the time. You mispronounced many names in your clips. Might wanna work on that.

I'm Russian, from Russia. I read about Big Jim Colosimo (something in Russian and in English). And I feel sorry for him. He is from a Distant Italy, sailed this ocean and he built such an Empire. And picked up (as we say in Russia "in the trash found" these two young illiterate scum-Capone and Torrio. He made people out of them, gave them jobs and money - and they were feared and respected only because they called Jim's name. But the young insolent scum - felt more money that will bring the "dry law". And instead of gratitude, they killed Big Jim Colosimo and took everything. Big Jim didn't have to feed those greedy rats, he had to kill them when they were young, and then he'd still be king of Chicago. A big Hello to all from Russia!

What Torrio did to Jim, Capone did to Torrio. For the same reason, refusing to expand and make money.

And here I thought they called them the black hand because they would cut off big black guys hands and threaten to shove them up peoples asses if they didn't pay up. See there you learn something less amusing than ones own personal grotesque imagination everyday. Thank you B&B for shedding some glimmer of light and knowledge to my poor darkened soul.

big Jim what a Racketeer
Crazcompart
I have always thought that Big Jim's opposition about expanding into bootlegging during Prohibition was possibly similar to the way the later 50s and 60s bosses thought about getting into narcotics... Although there was a vast amount of revenue to be generated, there would result a great deal of rival competition and subsequent bloodshed, thus bringing even more unfavorable attention by the media and increased scrutiny from law enforcement, all of which of course, transpired...Colosimo, like the later bosses, felt that all this groping for fast, easy money was more trouble than it was worth...He liked things the way they were, and he was killed for that...
